8-0 Going into Christmas Break

Beaver heads into Christmas break 8-0 after a very though road win over North Sevier 50-47.  Beaver is now riding an 8 game winnning streak and is unbeaten on the year.  The break comes at a good time as the Beavers need to get healthy and impove on a few things.
They will return to the court early on the 27th for 3 days of practice.  Up next for the Beavers is a January 2nd trip to Maeser Prep.  It is my hope that every one have a very Merry Christmas and a HOOPY New Year.  I will be back on the blog after practcie on the 27th.  Can't wait to see the family and enjoy some down time.

BEAVER NOW 7-0

Beaver took their record to 7-0 tonight with a hard fought win against the Emery Spartans.
Unlike the last couple of games the Beavers came out ready tonight!  Defense led the way as they held the Spartans to 1 point in the 2nd quarter.  Emery made a run late in the 3rd quarter and into the 4th quarter.  Beaver executed against the press and the half court traps Emery threw at them and won their 7th game 55-47.  Next up for the Beavers is North Sevier on the road this Friday.

My Man Cave/Office

Came home the other night and my daughter Heather & grand daughter Tanley suprised me with a office make over!  It is now a MAN CAVE with a lot of my coaching career and memorabilia up on the walls!
Here is a K. Love-R. Westbrook Jersey.  Kevin Loves shoe and a team shoe signed by the 2008 final four team all from UCLA.  SUU game ball from my first Division I win vs Oklahoma.  The Career wins ball from SUU.  Some John Stockton autograph pictures on the wall as well from my Gonzaga days.
Most of the things on this wall are from the road to the Dome  (NCAA FINAL FOUR) from the 2008 season run to San Antonio.  The Detriot sign is from a Darren Collison photo shoot his senior year when the Final Four was being played in Detriot and he was holding this sign on the Sporting News cover.  The Chair is a Bench Chair from our trip to the 2008 Final Four in San Antonio Texas.
The article and the actual photo from the Provo News when we (SUU) beat BYU at BYU!  Great win for the SUU-T Birds. S. Hutton hit the 16ft game winning shot with 2.6 seconds to go from the right side of the lane.  Great moment for us all, the team rushed the floor at the buzzer.  I celebrated watching game films with our AD Tom Douple tha night.
And of course the man cave has to have some family pictures!!!  Oh and some trophies that Heather was awarded when she was a PLAYA. We still have some things to get up and I want to paint this summer.  I can't thank Heather and Tanley enough, I'm not creative enough and they really suprised me!!!

CS MiningBasketball Classic

First year of the CS Mining Basketball Classic and it was great!  Thanks to all the people at CS for their support and making this a super fun event.  Already starting to make plans for next years Classic.  This year the first day was at Milford just a short drive across the county.  We played Pinnacle and got off to a slow start, when we started to play better DEFENSE our offense got better.  Kind of funny how that works-good D leading to good O??  We won 58 to 39.
Milford has an awesome center jump circle!  It looks like their TIGER is busting through the floor!

Moving to Beaver today (Saturday) we ended up with a pretty nice crowd for both games.  We played Maeser Prep and they slowed the tempo way down and we had to grind this one out with solid DEFENSE.  In the 3rd quarter our "D" held Maeser to 2 points!!  We ended up winning34-22.  That makes the BEAVERS 6-0 on the season.
Hope you are all enjoying the blog! GO BEAVERS!!!

VOLLEYBALL UPDATE

I just started my blog a little bit ago so I thought I better update everyone on my Volleyball team.  This is after we just won the 3rd place game at the state tournament.

Warn ups before the game.  The State tournament was played at Utah Valley University in Orem Utah.

My biggest fan with her mother, yeah thats my granddaughter, she loved every minute of the tournament.  My daughter who also played volleyball at Beaver was excited for the team!!

Congratulations go out to two outstanding Beaver players.  McKenzie Pullman made 2nd team ALL-STATE as a setter, she had a great year!  MaCail Wood made 1st team ALL-STATE as a outside hitter/middle blocker, she had a great year as well.  They both return with two other outstanding starters next season.  The players and younger kids who aren't involved in basketball are working hard in the weight room with assitant coach Jacey Blackner, should have another exciting year!  GO BEAVER.

GRINDING THE GAME OUT

Yesterday I said we grinded out the game and would discuss it more later.  Well later is now!  We really were not in sync on the offensive end and thats when you have to make some adjustments.  So you look maybe to get better shots, run sets that will get paint shots, or to get the ball in the hands of your best player, in a place they can really work from!  You also must really get after it on the DEFENSIVE end and try to manufacture some easy transition baskets there.  In this game our defense kept getting better and better as the game went on.  Our offense struggled but we did slow down (be quick-but don't hurry)and set some good picks and used those pick pretty well late.  Now if we could step up to the FREE THROW LINE and make a few it would sure help me sleep better.
This weekend is the CS Mining Classic!!!  Fridays games are being played at Milford with Saturdays games being played at Beaver.  2 JV games each day followed by 2 Varsity games.  We need to have a Sea of blue at both gyms!!!

PREPARATION

This is a look at part of our pre-game preparation board.  We try to have some reminders on the board from our practice the day before.  Also we will have short run downs on the teams players with 2-3 important tendencies that they have.   This is also handed to all of our players usually after practice the night before the game in what we call a READY SHEET.  Then after practice we meet in the team room to read the READY SHEET together and answer any questions that they have.  We want every one COACHES & PLAYERS on the same page as to what our game plan will be for this opponent.
FAILNG TO PREPARE - IS PREPARING TO FAIL.
I hope this gives you a snap shot of what goes on inside the prepartation for a basketball team as they get ready to play!.

BEAVER NOW 4-0

Beaver improved their record to 4-0 on the season last night with a very tough game against Grand County H.S.  The game was close through out and the BEAVERS had to grind (more on this in another post) it out in the fourth quarter with tough DEFENSE.  The Beaver will next take the court in the C.S. Mining Basketball Classic.  Friday the Classic will be at Milford with Beaver JV playing at 2:30 and the Varsity taking the court at 5:30.  Saturday the Classic moves to Beaver with the Beaver JV playing at 12:30 and the Varsity playing the last game of the Classic at 3:30.  We hope our fans will make the short trip to Milford and support on the road!  Of course we need another GREAT CROWD for our game Saturday in Beaver.

BEAVER WINS RECORD NOW 3-0

Beaver wins tonight at home 62-47 and is now 3-0 on the season.  Another slow start for the Beavers, but they got going early in the second quarter, finally pulling away for good in the third quarter.  Beaver hit the floor again on Friday for another home game against Grand.  The game times have been moved up for Fridays games.  Freshmen game is at 3:00, J.V. at 4:30 and the Varity game will tip off at 6:00.  After that the Beavers will be co-hosting the C.S. Mining Classic.  Games will be played on Friday the 14th at Milford and Saturdays games will be played in Beaver.

HOME OPENER

Tonight is the home opener for the 2-0 Beaver basketball team.  This will be a test to see how the Beavers respond to being at home.  There are a lot more distractions when you play at home!  Going on the road is an US against the world type of feeling.  When your on the big yellow bus for an hour or two your isolated from all those distractions.  Tip off is set for 7pm.  Go BEAVER!

COACH MAJERUS

I am sad tonight with the passing of basketball coach Rick Majerus.  I got to know Rick a while back when he was at the U of U.  Sitting in on practices and coaches meetings as well as game preperation really helped me in my coaching.  He was much more than just a basketball coach, he helped people in need.  A quick story after a practice I was at I went with Coach to a mid-night city basketball game where he was going to speak to the players.  One of the players liked coaches basketball shoes and said he didnt have any to play in, so coach took his off and gave them to the young adult to have.  So coach went bare foot back to his hotel that night!  He will be missed.

Beaver Win on the road

Last night Beaver traveled to Bryce Valley HS for their second road game of the year  After a slow start and trailing by as many as 9 points in the first quarter, the Beavers rallied to take a 3 point lead into the locker room at the half. In the third and fourth quarters the Beaver built a lead by playing tough defense and controlling the boards at both ends of the floor.  The Beavers went on to win 53-48 taking their record to 2-0 on the season.  Off to a great start the Beavers will be at home for the first time this season playing Wednesday vs. Valley and Friday vs. Grand.

Circle 4 Farms will be sponsoring a shooting competition after every home game this season.  Pay a $1 to shoot a shot if you make the shot you WIN a Beaver/Circle 4 Farms Basketball.  Lets Jam the Gym! for Beaver Basketball.
